Islamic Banking and Finance Symposium: Ethics and Financial Practice in Global Perspective

This symposium is a joint industry-academia effort to examine the ethical standards of humanity’s quest for fair dealings in financial transactions and also examine Islamic banking and finance as a new niche in the global finance industry. A group of industry practitioners together with a group of academic specialists in religion, banking and finance have been actively examining the relationship between ethics in financial transactions, using Islamic banking and finance as a case study. Their work, based in Melbourne, is supported by the Australian Research Council.

The symposium will be part of the NCEIS Conference, based at The University of Melbourne. The symposium will feature a group of invited, internationally renowned specialists presenting papers on a variety of topics which will later be edited as a book, intended as a key resource on Islamic finance, banking and ethics.

We also invite the submission of papers to be presented at the symposium by scholars and financial practitioners. We welcome the submission of papers examining any aspect of Islamic banking, finance and ethics, and we are particularly interested in work from financial practitioners on the topic of financial contracts. All papers will be blind, peer-reviewed: accepted papers will have discussant reports and comments from symposium participants. These papers will be further reviewed for possible inclusion in the book and a number of papers will be reviewed for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Banking and Finance in vol. 7, 2010.
