Musawah – a new global network for equality and justice in the Muslim family

Marina Mahathir

Marina is an activist, working particularly in the field of HIV/AIDS. She was President of the Malaysian AIDS Council and Chair of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation for twelve years until 2005. She has represented Asia-Pacific NGOs at the United Nations on several occasions, the last in 2001 at the UN General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS. She was also the Asia Pacific NGO representative on the Programme Coordinating Board of UNAIDS, has sat on several UN expert group panels and is currently a member of the International Steering Committee of the Asia Pacific Leadership Forum on HIV and Development (APLF) as well as the International Advisory Group of AIDS2031. In addition, she has served as Vice-President of the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) and has acted as ASAP liaison to the past two Asia Pacific AIDS conferences as well as the next one in Bali, Indonesia in August 2009. Internationally, she is a member of a network of Muslim women, Women’s Islamic Initiative for Spirituality and Equality (WISE) as well as the newly launched global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family, Musawah.

Marina Mahathir will introduce Musawah - a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family, calling for equality, non-discrimination, justice and dignity as the basis of all human relations; full and equal citizenship for every individual; and marriage and family relations based on principles of equality and justice, with men and women sharing equal rights and responsibilities.

Visitors are advised that parking is generally available after 5.30pm on weeknights, and at all times at weekends. A fee of $5.00 is payable for weeknights and at weekends into the coin machines at Monash Road (Gate 4) off Swanston Street, and Grattan Street (Gate 10). Please note that coins only are required. Between 7am and 11pm Monday to Friday the University Square Carpark is open to the Public. The entrance is off Berkeley Street and is $3.00 per hour or a maximum of $9.00 all day.
