Aziz Cooper has worked as senior prison chaplain for the Islamic Council of Victoria’s prison chaplaincy service for the past seven years. He is the first Muslim to serve in the position of Coordinating Chaplain of a multi-faith Chaplaincy team in Australia. He also serves on the Chaplain’s Advisory Committee to the Victorian Criminal Justice Sector. His position includes recruitment, training and supervision of the team of Muslim Prison Chaplains; representation of Muslim chaplaincy at prison management levels; provision of religious services and advice to Muslim prisoners; facilitation of religious festivals; Islamic cultural awareness training for custodial staff; advocacy on behalf of prisoners; counselling and family support.
